Know the purpose of limbs angioplasty surgery

Angioplasty is usually considered minor surgery so does the limbs angioplasty surgery. The procedure is often done under conscious or modest sedation in a cath lab, which is a cardiovascular catheterization laboratory. The procedure is performed by threading a catheter, which is a thin tube, through a small puncture in the limb artery.

The purpose of doing the limbs angioplasty surgery is to open blocked or narrowed blood vessels that supply blood to the limbs, such as arms and legs. The flow of blood to limbs may be obstructed because of the building up of fatty deposits inside the arteries.  To open the artery, the surgeon will also use a thin metal mesh tube, known as a stent.  Blocked peripheral arteries can be opened using a stent placement or angioplasty.

The flow of blood in the human body may be reduced or blocked due to several reasons. Carotid angioplasty is a procedure, which is performed to open blocked arteries for restoring the blood flow to the brain. These arteries, which are situated on both sides of the neck of the body, play a vital role in supplying blood to the human brain. The main purpose of doing the procedure is to protect patients from getting a stroke.

The carotid angioplasty procedure will be done with a local anesthetic to numb the sides of the neck of the patient. Medicines will be given to patients to make them feel relax during the procedure. Patients will be in the awaken state during the procedure.
